This past Saturday was our day to start a compost pile outside in preparation for a big garden this Spring. We have been saving scrap food matter for about 2 weeks as we waited for a pretty day to make a box for our pile. It was, and still is, a learning lesson for us all! We pulled out the Noah Webster dictionary to find the Latin meaning of the word Compost and decompose. We learned that only "earthy" matter should go into our pile at a 2:1 ration of brown matter and green matter. We are still learning about the pH level of the soil and doing an experiment to see how long it takes for our pile to decompose. It should be interesting to see if this city life family can get anything to grow in our upcoming soil!! To be continued . . .

My mom started one last year and we contribute to the trash as we generate in one day what she would in 1 week. Keep me posted on the compost!! Talk about huge fat earthworms-your boys will love them!
